Services We ProvideWomen's Crisis Services assists survivors of sexual assault and domestic abuse, and their families, with a 24-hour crisis line, emergency shelter, peer counseling, support groups, and help dealing with police, medical, and court personnel. Crisis Hotline. WCS operates two full-time offices in Keene and Jaffrey, New Hampshire. We serve all of Cheshire County and 14 towns in western Hillsborough County. Our crisis hotline is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, by staff and trained volunteer Crisis Intervention Workers (CIWs). WCS offers advocacy with courts, police, hospitals, and other social service providers. Staff and Crisis Intervention Workers (CIWs) assist in the process of obtaining restraining orders, including assisting with the filing of domestic violence petitions, contacting appropriate police agencies, and accompanying clients to their final order hearings, in order to provide emotional support, answer questions about the process, and advocate for the client when needed. WCS advocates in Cheshire County Superior Court, Keene District Court, Jaffrey/Peterborough District Court, and Hillsborough District Court. Staff and CIWs also accompany clients to the police to file criminal complaints; to the hospital for medical services; and to welfare, legal, housing, or other appointments, as appropriate. In addition to providing safe shelter, emergency transportation is provided as needed to court, safe homes, out-of-area shelters, medical facilities, and occasionally, to other agencies. We provide basic information about a wide range of community services. We have a written policy regarding the reporting of child and elder abuse, and keep files for making referrals to police, medical services, therapists, attorneys, legal service programs, emergency and long term housing programs, job training programs, and city/town welfare departments. Referrals to legal, medical, police, and social services allow clients to obtain necessary help for fuel assistance, housing, pro-bono and pro-se legal services, medical attention, police assistance, etc. WCS offers a variety of Educational curricula developed in cooperation with regional schools for all grade levels. In 2001, 513 school and community presentations were given to more than 12,844 participants in the Monadnock region. Our experience has shown us that youngsters who begin as bullies often continue with harassing behavior which easily develops into dating violence and eventually, domestic or sexual violence. WCS also presents education and awareness programs to community groups, social service agencies, medical personnel, law enforcement, and others interested in learning about domestic and sexual violence. Prevention through education is of the utmost importance if we want to stop the cycle of violence. Our goal is to equip young people with the information, skills, and self-esteem necessary to make healthy choices for themselves. Our school programs include curricula which address issues of building self-esteem, healthy decision making, communication skills, healthy relationships, conflict resolution, bullying, teen relationship violence, sexual assault, sexual harassment, and stalking - specifically targeted to young people. We provide information and referrals in order to help with access to a safe, temporary shelter at confidential locations. Networking with community services, legal, and medical care systems improves coordination of service for our clients and results in combined efforts to develop needed community resources. The Domestic Violence Program at Monadnock Family Services offers groups for men who batter. WCS works with MFS to ensure contact with, and safety of, partners of the men in the group. WCS works to raise awareness throughout the community. Newspaper articles, radio and television public service announcements, distribution of brochures, and fund-raising events, all offer the opportunity to publicize our services and educate the community on issues of domestic and sexual violence. WCS hosts events for Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Awareness months such as panel discussions, video presentations, library displays, Take Back the Night Marches, educational workshops, Tee shirt making for the National Clothesline Project and self-defense workshops.
